Nuclear Scintigraphy
Bone Scans for Horses
Advanced Nuclear Scintigraphy for Equine Patients
At Friendship Veterinary Imaging Center, we offer nuclear scintigraphy using a state-of-the-art gamma camera to provide a powerful, whole-body diagnostic tool for bone disease in horses. This imaging service allows veterinarians to identify areas of abnormal bone turnover and occasionally soft tissue changes that may not be visible with traditional imaging methods.
Nuclear scintigraphy involves administering a safe amount of a radiopharmaceutical that collects in areas of increased bone turnover. Our gamma camera then captures detailed images that highlight these changes, helping your veterinarian pinpoint the source of lameness, unexplained pain, or other complex clinical signs.
This diagnostic approach is especially valuable for:
- Early detection of musculoskeletal conditions in horses, including stress fractures, osteoarthropathy and subtle bone injuries
- Locating occult lameness that does not show up on X-rays or ultrasound
- Helping guide treatment plans and monitor response to therapy
Nuclear scintigraphy complements other imaging modalities like radiography, ultrasound, CT, and MRI to give your veterinary team the most complete understanding of your companion’s health.
